In Appreciation for Mothers and Mother Figures Everywhere

Across the U.S. and beyond, mothers of LGBTQ+ children are on the forefront of the fight for equality in ways big and small, from advocating in their children’s schools to testifying in front of their state legislatures.

Most importantly, every day at home these moms make sure their children know that they are loved and affirmed. These moms are standing strong to protect their children from the onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks, especially those aimed at trans and nonbinary youth. Some of these fierce “mama bears” serve on HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council (PTEC), and thousands more engage with our expanding Parents for Transgender Equality Network.

In recognition of Mother’s Day, we invited our PTEC moms to send messages of support to the hundreds of thousands of other moms who are fighting, and sometimes struggling alongside them to keep their children safe and to make a better world for LGBTQ+ youth everywhere.

Dear Fellow Mom,

Happy Mother’s Day! Parenting a gender diverse child is both a tremendous blessing and responsibility. Your love and support can help your kiddo soar in a world that desperately wants to clip their wings. Be encouraged, stay strong, find community with other parents and families, and know that even now, you’re not alone.
