Without comprehensive equal rights legislation at the federal level, LGBTQ people are subject to an inconsistent patchwork of legal protections in their states and local communities. This leaves millions of our most marginalized people at risk of potential discrimination at work and in their daily lives.

That’s why The Human Rights Campaign fights for LGBTQ equality alongside lawmakers at the local and state levels across the country. Find out what HRC is doing in Mississippi and how you can help secure equal rights for all of its LGBTQ citizens.

2020 Endorsed Candidates:

  • Rep. Bennie Thompson (MS-2)
Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC (www.hrc.org) and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

In 2017, a harmful Mississippi state law allowing the use of religion as a justification for discrimination against LGBTQ Mississippians at work, school and in their communities goes into effect. H.B. 1523, deceptively titled the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act,” is by far the most sweeping and devastating state law to be enacted against LGBTQ people in the country.

Sergeant Justin Kelly is an openly gay Iraq War veteran from Mississippi’s Delta region and speaks about serving his country with dignity and respect.
