In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day, HRC members and supporters across the country will gather for the annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 16.
Every year, millions of people across the country treat MLK Day of Service as a "day on, not a day off." Working together, HRC hopes to transform Dr. King's life and teachings into community action to help meet national challenges by bringing together people and strengthening communities.
HRC believes that we have a responsibility to deepen our commitment and connection to those in our community who are too often at its margins. This year, we will work to ensure the safety and well-being of homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth.
Youth homelessness in the United States is a national crisis in urban, suburban and rural communities affecting nearly 2.8 million youth between the ages of 12 and 24. Consistent research finds that LGBT youth are overrepresented among homeless youth, comprising approximately 40 percent of the total homeless youth population -- even though they make up less than 10 percent of the overall youth population.
Consequences of homeless youth in the United States, particularly for LGBTQ youth, range from issues in mental and physical health, sexual abuse and exploitation, chemical and alcohol dependency, educational attainment, to social stigma, discrimination and family rejection.
Before and during January 16, HRC members and supporters will be collecting supplies and assembling care bags for LGBTQ homeless youth. On MLK Day of Service, hundreds will gather to serve their community and those in need. Find out how you can get involved.
