CARSON CITY, NEVADA — In the midst of a national state of emergency for the LGBTQ+ Americans, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization — commends the Nevada Legislature and Governor Joe Lombardo for enacting several pro-LGBTQ+ laws this legislative session.
Human Rights Campaign Nevada State Director Karl Catarata released the following statement:
“The Human Rights Campaign is thrilled by the Nevada Legislature and Governor Lombardo’s support and advocacy for LGBTQ+ Nevadans. While across the country we’re witnessing discriminatory attacks against our community, particularly against transgender and nonbinary people, Nevada legislators and Governor Lombardo showed us that they will not bow to hateful pressure from anti-LGBTQ+ extremists.
Progress like this is how we get things done for Nevadans - so we thank the Governor, pro-equality legislators, and our state and local partner organizations for getting the job done.”
Among the pro-LGBTQ+ bills to become law this session are:
This bill requires the Nevada Department of Corrections to create rules around the care and treatment of transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex incarcerated persons.
This bill ensures that insurance companies cannot deny medically necessary coverage to our transgender and non-binary community in Nevada.
This bill makes it possible for LGBTQ+ Nevadans to request that their name be changed on their marriage certificate by their local county or municipality clerk beyond the time of the issuance of their marriage certificate.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ+ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
