Meet Rebekah, A 14-Year-old Field Hockey Player Turned Transgender Advocate

by Lauren Precker

So far in 2021, legislators in more than 30 states have introduced bills to ban trans kids from playing sports. Few of those lawmakers actively trying to pass these bills have taken the time to listen to, or get to know, the student athletes who would be impacted.

Meet Rebekah:

Trans kids want to play sports for the same reasons all kids do: to be part of a team, to learn discipline, and above all, to have fun with their friends. But lawmakers across the country are trying to pass laws that would ban trans youth from participating in school sports.

Rebekah, a 14-year-old field hockey player, is like every other kid. She’s a big sister, an eager student, and she loves playing sports as much for the chance to be with her friends as the opportunities to be in and learn from competition.

“Sports are something that I really like doing, I am so much more than trans. That doesn’t make me less of a girl, less of a human, either. I’m just me!”

Rebekah

There’s so much deliberate misinformation circulating out in the world about what it means to be a trans kid playing sports. Rebekah’s story is a story that more people need to hear.

We thank Rebekah and her family for sharing their experience. And to other trans student athletes, we see you, we love you, and we will not stop fighting for you.
