Religion and Faith Action Steps

The results from election day make clear we still have much to do to move people of faith to support our basic human rights.  The outlines of a plan for engaging faith communities, including those among communities of color, is developing.  Faith leaders from around California and national leaders will be meeting soon to flesh out those plans.  We are grateful that outstanding leaders like HRC Religion Council member Rabbi Denise Eger, Rev. Deborah Johnson, and Rev. Lindi Ramsden are giving leadership to that process.

There is an action step you can take now. Those of us who are people of faith should consider making ourselves better known in our faith communities.  We in supportive communities should urge our faith groups to do more to foster understanding of LGBT people, our lives, our needs, and our struggle for legal recognition and protection.  There is a particularly important role for our allies in this work.

Talk with your clergy leaders and let them know your family, or that of those you love, is under attack.  The HRC Religion and Faith Program has provided a resource to help you think about those conversations.  Living Openly in Your Place of Worship is available for download at http://www.hrc.org/about_us/7163.htm. The Religion and Faith Program will be actively engaging faith communities in California as we move forward on the march toward equality. Likewise, we will continue to expand our work in all parts of the country.  If you are interested in advocating with faith communities in your hometown or beyond, please let us know by writing us at religion@hrc.org.  Tell us what you are thinking about and we'll let you know how we can help.
