WASHINGTON – A poll by NBC News/ Wall Street Journal today shows that 54 percent of Americans would support a law in their state making same-sex marriage legal, while 40% oppose it. The latest survey is in line with a raft of other national polls reflecting the fast growing momentum in support of marriage for committed gay and lesbian couples.
“We’ve seen it time and again for the last three years: a majority of Americans are on board with marriage equality,” said Fred Sainz, Human Rights Campaign Vice President of Communications. “This issue has gained traction quickly because fair-minded Americans are realizing marriage for all couples is about commitment and family.”
The poll comes on the heels of President Obama’s announcement that he supports same-sex marriage earlier this month and the historic NAACP Board of Directors vote to endorse marriage equality last weekend.
Today's poll also shows that 62 percent of respondents say the president's support for marriage equality won't affect their vote.
The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
