Oscar-winning actress and Maryland native issues a call to action to support marriage equality and combat opposition efforts
08/09/2012
Washington– Academy Award-winning actress Mo’Nique is continuing her fight to advocate for marriage equality in Maryland. Today, she is sending a fundraising email on behalf of the Human Rights Campaign, urging recipients to support the fight for marriage equality in the Free State. The Maryland native previously recorded a video for HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality campaign. She also delivered a similar message for the Marylanders for Marriage Equality campaign. In her email today, Mo’Nique calls out the deceptive tactics that the opposition is engaging in to roll back equality:
“Nothing is more difficult than hearing attacks being made on anyone, especially my fellow Marylanders, however anti-equality forces are not going to make it easy…They say that children will be hurt by having two moms or two dads and that religious institutions are under threat. You and I both know that simply is not true.”
“We are thrilled that Mo’Nique is continuing her efforts to protect marriage equality in Maryland,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Our opponents are running a deceptive and divisive campaign, but Mo’Nique’s voice is representative of the broad support for equality we’re seeing across the state.”
Earlier this week, HRC announced a $1 million investment in the four ballot states – Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington. Maryland received $250,000 of that investment, bringing HRC’s contributions to the fight for marriage equality in the state to $1.6 million. To date, HRC has contributed $4.8 million to legislative and electoral marriage issues in the 2011-2012 cycle.
A new poll shows overall support for marriage equality in Maryland at 54 percent, in-line with national support. A Public Policy Poll from earlier this summer also shows that 55 percent of African Americans in Maryland support marriage equality.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.
