2015 HRC Chefs for Equality hosts say donations will benefit fight for full LGBT equality
WASHINGTON – Today, organizers of the annual Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Chefs for Equality food-and-cocktail celebration on Oct. 20 announced that four capital region restaurants are pledging to donate a portion of their proceeds for the month of October to the event’s beneficiary - the HRC Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization.
“We are thrilled that these businesses have stepped up to help in the fight for LGBT equality with their generous offers,” said David Hagedorn, prominent DC-based food writer and head of the Chefs for Equality host committee. “This is in keeping with the spirit of Chefs for Equality, which is dedicated to ensuring that the HRC Foundation can continue its work for LGBT equality and inclusion nationally -- including in schools, health care settings, faith communities, and social service agencies.”
Participating establishments, and their October pledges, include:
For the fourth consecutive year, Chefs for Equality on Oct. 20 will bring together the capital region’s top chefs, pastry chefs, and mixologists for an evening of food, cocktails and music to benefit the fight for full LGBT equality. The event will be held at The Ritz-Carlton, Washington, DC. In addition to the impressive fare, an auction benefiting the HRC Foundation will be held.
On the heels of the historic victory for nationwide marriage equality at the Supreme Court, this year’s theme is “RFRAin [refrain] from Discrimination!” in response to attempts by anti-LGBT extremists to pass so-called Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) bills. These dubiously-named “religious freedom” bills undermine the rule of law by creating special exemptions for people to pick and choose which laws they will follow, largely in an attempt to carve out ways to discriminate against the LGBT community.
