HRC celebrates Senator Markey’s strong leadership on equality as he seeks another term in the U.S. Senate this November

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, proudly announced its endorsement of Senator Edward Markey for U.S. Senate. Throughout his career, Sen. Markey has fought for equality –  cosponsoring the Equality Act, introducing the Transgender Bill of Rights resolution, and being a champion opposing anti-trans legislation, As a decades-long champion for LGBTQ+ equality, Sen. Markey brings relentless energy to the fight for equal rights and always stands ten toes down in his support for the freedom for all people to live fully and unapologetically.

“Ed Markey is a proven champion for equality who has never wavered in the fight to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” said Kelley Robinson, President of the Human Rights Campaign. “From serving as a cosponsor of the Equality Act to leading strong opposition to the addition of anti-trans provisions in appropriations and defense authorization bills, Senator Markey has consistently shown up for LGBTQ+ people in Massachusetts and the country. At a time when equality and freedom are under assault, we need leaders with the courage and conviction to lead – and stand unshakeable in their values. Senator Markey fights every day to ensure everyone has what they need to thrive, and that’s exactly why the Senate needs his continued leadership.”

“In Massachusetts, we led the nation in the fight for marriage equality – and I will never let MAGA Republicans drag us backward,” said Senator Ed Markey. “I am honored to earn the Human Rights Campaign’s endorsement as we celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility this week, and there has never been a more important time to stand up for our transgender neighbors, friends, and family members,” said U.S. Senator Ed Markey. “Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are trying to erase LGBTQ+ Americans from public life – stripping away civil rights protections, targeting transgender youth, and banning transgender people from serving their country. I will not let that stand. I am proud to have cosponsored the Transgender Bill of Rights and the Transgender Health Care Access Act because transgender rights are human rights – full stop. I am honored to fight alongside the HRC to defeat these attacks against the LGBTQ+ community and make full equality the law of the land.”

Sen. Ed Markey Record on LGBTQ+ Rights:

  • Cosponsor of the Equality Act, driving landmark legislation to ensure federal protections for LGBTQ+ Americans
  • 100% lifetime voting record on HRC's Congressional Scorecard
  • Vocally opposed anti-trans provisions in multiple appropriations bills and in the National Defense Authorization Act
  • Lead sponsor of the Transgender Bill of Rights resolution
  • A trusted leader in the fight to block anti-trans legislation and defend transgender communities nationwide

Equality Voters — including the more than 2.7 million in Massachusetts — are a powerful and diverse voting bloc united by support for LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, and they recognize and trust the HRC brand.

HRC PAC has made significant investments in Massachusetts over the years, working to elect pro-equality champions up and down the ballot and defending hard-won protections like the passage of HB148 which protects individuals from discrimination based on gender identity. Today, HRC PAC continues to build on this legacy by mobilizing Equality Voters and supporting leaders, like Ed Markey, who are committed to ensuring every Bay Stater can live free from discrimination and with full dignity under the law.
