Human Rights Campaign on the Historic Confirmation of Secretary Lloyd Austin

by HRC Staff

Post submitted by Viet Tran (he/him/they/them), former HRC Press Secretary

The U.S. Senate in a historic and overwhelmingly bipartisan vote confirmed Lloyd Austin as Secretary of Defense. He is the first African American to lead the Pentagon.

Congratulations to Secretary Lloyd Austin on his historic confirmation. Having spoken directly with the Secretary, I know first hand his dedication to ensuring our military will value readiness over bias and qualifications over discrimination. He has shared with me his commitment to equality and the importance of having an inclusive armed forces, including prioritizing the immediate reversal of the discriminatory ban on transgender military service. As the first Black man to lead the Human Rights Campaign, this moment is especially poignant. We celebrate Secretary Lloyd Austin’s historic confirmation and I look forward to working alongside him and the Biden administration to ensure equality is achieved for our brave patriots across our military.

Alphonso David, President of the Human Rights Campaign
