Human Rights Campaign Endorses Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin for Re-election

by Cullen Peele

MADISON — Today the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of Senator Tammy Baldwin for reelection. HRC PAC is committed to engaging our volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize the more than 714,000 Equality Voters in Wisconsin in support of Baldwin and other pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.

There's no one who's put in more hard work for Wisconsin families than Tammy Baldwin. A relentless advocate for a strong, homegrown Wisconsin economy, affordable healthcare, and expanded civil rights, Tammy is a true champion.

As a historic trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community, she's shattered barriers, showing countless young folks that no dream is too big, no love is too different. Her leadership in passing the Respect for Marriage Act and ditching 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' is just the beginning.

Senator Baldwin isn't just a lawmaker; she's a bridge builder, a champion for progress. We're fighting for Tammy Baldwin to return to the halls of power because she has always fought for us. Let's ensure her re-election and work hand in hand to pass the Equality Act into law. Because with leaders like Tammy, we're not just making history; we're shaping a brighter, more equal future for every Wisconsinite and every American.”

Kelley Robinson, Human Rights Campaign President

I am so honored to receive HRC’s endorsement today. Together we have made history, including passing the Respect for Marriage Act exactly one year ago. There is still more work left to do, but with HRC in my corner, I know we’re going to win the fight to make Wisconsin and our country a safer and more equitable place for all who live here.”

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin

Baldwin is the first openly gay U.S. senator and the first woman from Wisconsin elected to both chambers of Congress. Throughout her public service, she has been a pioneer for equality. The lead sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act, Senator Baldwin was also a leader in the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” an early supporter of marriage equality, a champion for federal hate crimes protections, and co-author of the Equality Act, crucial legislation that would extend comprehensive federal protections to LGBTQ+ people.

In 2018, ahead of Baldwin’s last reelection, HRC members and supporters completed over 1,480 volunteer shifts in Wisconsin and knocked on over 11,300 doors while sending over 52,000 text messages to voters in the final days of her campaign. This year, HRC will deploy the same resources and forces to secure another victory for Senator Baldwin and the future of equality.

HRC’s Commitment to Wisconsin

Equality Voters, including the over 714,000 in Wisconsin, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

HRC has had staff and resources on the ground in Wisconsin since 2017. Across the country, HRC PAC works every day to elect pro-equality leaders who support policies that will support the rights and lives of LGBTQ+ people. During the 2020 election cycle, HRC staff on the ground recruited 5,800 individual volunteers nationwide who completed 28,500 hours of voter contact in more than 2,650 volunteer events. HRC engaged in robust digital and online GOTV efforts, including sending over 2.7 million person-to-person text messages, a massive increase from 2018 when approximately 500,000 texts were sent. HRC sent over 2.5 million mail pieces, had over 930,000 phone conversations with voters, and engaged more than 200,000 voters through HRC’s voter dashboard at
