Human Rights Campaign Endorses Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine for Reelection

by HRC Staff

Carson City, Nevada — Today the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) endorsed Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine for reelection. HRC PAC is committed to engaging our volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize the more than 700,000 Equality Voters in Nevada in support of pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.

Human Rights Campaign Nevada State Director Karl Catarata released the following statement:

“Treasurer Zach Conine has been an incredible ally for LGBTQ+ people here in Nevada. As Nevada State Treasurer, he’s consistently advocated for pro-equality and anti-discrimination legislation, including Senate Bill 237. We’re confident that if reelected to office, Conine will continue to push for economic policies that support all Nevadans, including the LGBTQ+ community. Equality is on the ballot this November, and voting for Conine helps ensure that Nevada remains an inclusive state.”

A Record as a Champion of Equality

Zach Conine has served as Nevada's State Treasurer since he was first elected in 2018. While in office, Treasurer Conine has made significant progress in support of the LGBTQ+ community, including helping LGBTQ+ students across the state receive scholarships, and assisting LGBTQ+ small business owners during the COVID-19 pandemic with local on-the-ground coalition partners. In 2021, Treasurer Conine testified in support of Nevada Senate Bill 237, which supports LGBTQ+ owned businesses by prohibiting discrimination and eliminating barriers for business owners. The bill successfully passed. If re-elected, Treasurer Conine has pledged to be a staunch supporter of LGBTQ+ legislation that supports foster youth, small businesses, and more.

Opponent With Anti-Equality Records

Conine’s opponent, Michele Fiore, is quoted several times on the record against LGBTQ+ and underserved communities. She falsely claimed that the Uvalde shooter “was also on a lot of different medications from transgendering. So his mind was quite defective” and that “transgendering” can cause school shootings. In 2020, Fiore was rebuked by the Clark County Republican Party for racist comments, including “my white ass is more qualified than somebody’s black ass.”

Fiore is an active election denier and promoter of Trump’s “Big Lie”. She is currently under FBI investigation for misuse of campaign financing and continues to campaign on Trump’s agenda for Nevada.

HRC’s Commitment to Nevada

HRC Nevada is building upon the staff and resources it has had on the ground in both Las Vegas and Reno since 2018. This includes its partnership with Nevada Democratic Victory on coordinated campaign events like door knocking and phone banking

  • September 10th — Earlier this month, in North Las Vegas, HRC Nevada staff and volunteers canvassed with Nevada Democratic Victory to support eight endorsed candidates. Candidates included U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Governor Steve Sisolak, Congressman Steven Horsford, Nevada State Assembly candidate Will Rucker, and Nevada State Assembly Members Danielle Monroe-Moreno, Shondra Summers-Armstrong, Clara Thomas, and Camerone "C.H." Miller. HRC Nevada also canvassed for Assembly candidate Erica Mosca in East Las Vegas for her second canvass launch.

  • September 17th — HRC Nevada is hosting a Southern Nevada Campaign Kick-Off in Downtown Las Vegas to mobilize grassroots voters. More information can be found here.

  • Volunteer engagement — HRC Nevada’s strategy will be fueled in part by a vast and highly energized grassroots network that includes 600 active volunteers across Nevada.

  • Endorsements — HRC will support endorsed pro-equality, pro-choice, and pro-democracy candidates up and down the ballot through direct voter outreach, campaign events, and more.

Equality Voters, including the more than 700,000 in Nevada, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

Across the country, HRC PAC works every day to elect pro-equality leaders who advocate for policies that will support the rights and lives of LGBTQ+ people. During the 2020 election cycle, HRC staff on the ground recruited 5,800 individual volunteers nationwide who completed 28,500 hours of voter contact in more than 2,650 volunteer events. HRC engaged in robust digital and online GOTV efforts, including sending over 2.7 million person-to-person text messages, a massive increase from 2018 when approximately 500,000 texts were sent. HRC sent over 2.5 million mail pieces, had over 930,000 phone conversations with voters, and engaged more than 200,000 voters through HRC’s voter dashboard at hrc.org/vote.
