"He Has Spoken Frequently in Support of LGBTQ+ Equality and Has Taken Action to Combat Anti-LGBTQ+ Discrimination"
MADISON — Today the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of Attorney General Josh Kaul for reelection. HRC PAC is committed to engaging our volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize the 700,000 Equality Voters in Wisconsin in support of Kaul and other pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.
Human Rights Campaign Wisconsin State Director Wendy Strout released the following statement:
“Having a fierce LGBTQ+ ally as attorney general has been a great asset to Wisconsin and its residents, and the Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Josh Kaul for another term in office. He has spoken frequently in support of LGBTQ+ equality and has taken action to combat anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. In recent weeks, he has taken a principled stand by pronouncing that his office will not prosecute doctors for performing abortions if the Roe v. Wade decision is overturned by the Supreme Court – yet another action that supports the LGBTQ+ community, for whom the right to exercise bodily autonomy is so precious. We look forward to seeing Attorney General Kaul serve another term and continue the great work he has already done.”
Attorney General Kaul released the following statement:
“I’m proud to announce that the Human Rights Campaign has endorsed my campaign for re-election. At a time when hard-won freedoms are under attack, we need to send a loud and clear message at the polls this fall: we do not want to see the clock rolled back on fundamental rights.”
During his time in office, Attorney General Kaul has been a consistent and reliable LGBTQ+ ally. He has spoken in support of passing the Equality Act by Congress, spoken against legislation that would ban transgender kids from playing sports, and taken action in support of same-sex parents becoming foster parents. He also opposed a Trump-era rule allowing health-care discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and supported the U.S. Supreme Court’s Bostock decision, which forbids discrimination in hiring on the basis of gender identity.
HRC’s Commitment to Wisconsin
Equality Voters, including the 700,000 in Wisconsin, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.
HRC has had staff and resources on the ground in Wisconsin since 2017. Across the country, HRC PAC works every day to elect pro-equality leaders who support policies that will support the rights and lives of LGBTQ+ people. During the 2020 election cycle, HRC staff on the ground recruited 5,800 individual volunteers nationwide who completed 28,500 hours of voter contact in more than 2,650 volunteer events. HRC engaged in robust digital and online GOTV efforts, including sending over 2.7 million person-to-person text messages, a massive increase from 2018 when approximately 500,000 texts were sent. HRC sent over 2.5 million mail pieces, had over 930,000 phone conversations with voters, and engaged more than 200,000 voters through HRC’s voter dashboard at hrc.org/vote.
