Rep. Rafferty Has Stood Tall Fighting for LGBTQ+ Equality Since Entering Legislature in 2018

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of incumbent Neil Rafferty of Alabama in his reelection campaign for State Representative for Alabama’s 54th House District:

Human Rights Campaign Alabama State Director Carmarion D. Anderson–Harvey released the following statement:

“Despite repeated attempts from anti-equality legislators in the Alabama State House to pass dangerous and harmful legislation, Rep. Rafferty has stood tall fighting for LGBTQ+ equality. Since entering the legislature in 2018, Rep. Rafferty has been a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and marginalized communities across the state. Alabamians are fortunate to have someone like Rep. Rafferty fighting every day to defend equal rights and make the state a better and safer place for all. The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Rep. Rafferty in his campaign for reelection and hope that other elected officials throughout the state follow his lead.”

Rep. Neil Rafferty released the following statement:

"I'm honored to have the support and endorsement from the Human Rights Campaign for my reelection to the Alabama House of Representatives. As the representative for District 54, I've championed equality for all Alabamians, speaking against and denouncing discrimination of all kinds. With HRC's partnership, we've been in the trenches combating anti-LGBTQ+ legislation that invades privacy and limits family access to care. I look forward to welcoming HRC volunteers back to District 54 as we continue to make a greater impact promoting equality. With your support, we can continue defending equal rights and, in the process, make Alabama better together."

A Dedicated Defender Of Equal Rights

Rep. Neil Rafferty has been a devoted public servant his entire life and a dedicated defender and advocate for equal rights, LGBTQ+ and racial equity, women’s health, minority health, veterans issues, Medicaid expansion, and voter rights. Rep. Rafferty served our country honorably as a U.S. Marine, and now, as an Alabama state representative, on the front-line working to defend marginalized communities from a wave of legislative attacks, including recent attempts to strip life-saving gender-affirming care away from transgender youth. Throughout his tenure, Rep. Rafferty has been a role model and has worked diligently to provide a healthier and safer community for all. Rep. Rafferty's ongoing leadership, support, devotion, and LGBTQ+ voice are incredibly beneficial in fighting for equality in Alabama.

HRC PAC is committed to engaging our volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize in favor of candidates like Rep. Rafferty. In Alabama, HRC PAC will be working to turn out 176,000 Equality Voters in support of pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot. Equality Voters are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

Across the country, HRC works every day to elect pro-equality leaders who support policies that will support the rights and lives of LGBTQ+ people. During the 2020 election cycle, HRC staff on the ground recruited 5,800 individual volunteers nationwide who completed 28,500 hours of voter contact in more than 2,650 volunteer events. HRC engaged in robust digital and online GOTV efforts, including sending over 2.7 million person-to-person text messages, a massive increase from 2018 when approximately 500,000 texts were sent. HRC sent over 2.5 million mail pieces, had over 930,000 phone conversations with voters, and engaged more than 200,000 voters through HRC’s voter dashboard at hrc.org/vote.

Paid for by Human Rights Campaign PAC, 1640 Rhode Island Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20016. Not authorized by any federal candidate or candidate committee.
