Post submitted by Viet Tran (he/him/they/them), former HRC Press Secretary

Today, the Human Rights Campaign released the following statement in support of Rep. David Cicilline’s (D-RI) bid for assistant speaker of the United States House of Representatives. If selected, he would be the first openly gay official to hold the role. Cicilline is the only openly LGBTQ member of the House of Representatives to currently hold a leadership role and is co-chair of the Congressional LGBTQ Equality Caucus.

Rep. David Cicilline has been a steadfast and vital voice in Congress for the LGBTQ community, and the Human Rights Campaign is proud to support his bid for assistant speaker of the House. Rep. Cicilline has been the only LGBTQ voice at the leadership table and led the House’s effort to pass the Equality Act last year. He has advocated for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ people – both within Congress and without. For all the fights we have ahead, we are proud to support him.

Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign President

Rep. David Cicilline was first elected to Congress in 2010, after serving as the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island. The Human Rights Campaign has endorsed his candidacy for Congress in each election since. Rep. Cicilline introduced the Equality Act in 2015, and was a key leader in advancing and passing the bill in 2019.
