by Aneesha Pappy

BOSTON -- Today the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey for Governor of Massachusetts. HRC PAC is committed to engaging our volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize the 2.37 million Equality Voters in Massachusetts in support of Healey and other pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.

Human Rights Campaign Associate Regional Campaign Director Cooper Reed released the following statement:

“Maura Healey made history as the first openly gay Attorney General in the US and is now running to become to the first out lesbian Governor in the country. In her time as Massachusetts Attorney General, Healey supported a multitude of pro-LGBTQ+ initiatives– from advocating for non-discrimination protections to pushing for the recognition of gender-neutral markers on state IDs. Her tireless commitment to LGBTQ+ rights has empowered the LGBTQ+ community and highlights the importance of having LGBTQ+ representation in politics. We are proud to endorse Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey for Governor and will put forth efforts to ensure that she can continue to do the hard, necessary work to make Massachusetts an inclusive place for all Bay Staters.”

A Record as a Champion of Equality

Healey has been a consistent and active advocate for equality, both before and during her time as Massachusetts Attorney General. Prior to serving as the first openly gay Attorney General in the country, Healey was the Civil Rights Chief in the Attorney General’s Office and brought the first successful challenge to the anti-LGBTQ+ Defense of Marriage Act. She worked to fight bullying in schools, protect women’s rights to accessible, reproductive healthcare, combat discrimination in lending and housing and train law enforcement on hate crime prevention. After becoming MA’s Attorney General, Healey has led many efforts to expand and protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community including pushing for gender neutral markers both at the state and federal level. She has stood strong against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and policy by challenging efforts to roll back non-discrimination protections in healthcare and opposing political attacks on trans individuals. Healey’s long and successful history advocating for LGBTQ+ rights demonstrates her commitment to equality and illustrates the type of advocate and leader she would be, if elected Massachusetts Governor.

HRC’s Commitment to Massachusetts

Equality Voters, including the 2.37 million in Massachusetts, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

Across the country, HRC PAC works every day to elect pro-equality leaders who support policies that will support the rights and lives of LGBTQ+ people. During the 2020 election cycle, HRC staff on the ground recruited 5,800 individual volunteers nationwide who completed 28,500 hours of voter contact in more than 2,650 volunteer events. HRC engaged in robust digital and online GOTV efforts, including sending over 2.7 million person-to-person text messages, a massive increase from 2018 when approximately 500,000 texts were sent. HRC sent over 2.5 million mail pieces, had over 930,000 phone conversations with voters, and engaged more than 200,000 voters through HRC’s voter dashboard at hrc.org/vote.
