Human Rights Campaign: DeSantis’ Military Plan is an Insult to Every Servicemember and Will Only Weaken Our National Defense

by Cullen Peele

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization — responded to Florida Governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis’ attack on transgender service members as part of his military proposal that he discussed with CNN’s Jake Tapper this afternoon.

LGBTQ+ service members have served with honor and distinction, defending our fundamental freedoms, sometimes paying the ultimate price. A military that is open to all qualified Americans is a military that is stronger and better—but instead of honoring our service members, Ron DeSantis would turn back to an era of discrimination and witch hunts. All of this in service of his cruel and cynical politics of division and scapegoating to appeal to a small, but radical, political base.”
