WASHINGTON – In a television interview this morning, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett shockingly compared marriage equality to incest. The Human Rights Campaign quickly checked the calendar to make sure that April Fool’s Day hadn’t been rescheduled. With a growing majority of the American public supportive of marriage equality, Corbett’s extremist views are inaccurate, dangerous, and gravely insulting to committed and loving gay and lesbian couples.
“Gov. Corbett proved today he is horribly out of touch with reality and does not represent the views of fair-minded Pennsylvanians,” said Fred Sainz, HRC Vice President for Communications. “Americans of all political stripes are embracing marriage equality and the nation is moving forward on the issue while Gov. Corbett wants to turn back the clock.”
And it gets worse. Gov. Corbett’s lawyers had earlier compared marriages of same-sex couples to children marrying. Corbett walked back those comments, saying, "I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don't you?"
“Opponents of equality are becoming increasingly desperate these days. Gov. Corbett’s remarks embody that desperation, especially as equality efforts pick up speed in Pennsylvania," Sainz said.
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
