HRC President Kelley Robinson Releases Statement on U.S. Supreme Court's Decision to Gut Voting Rights Act

HRC President Kelley Robinson releases a statement on today’s Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which undermines key provisions of the Voting Rights Act and strikes down Louisiana's new congressional map, which added a second majority Black district.

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling allows extremists to continue undercutting critical, hard-fought protections like the Voting Rights Act and threatens the fundamental promise at the heart of our democracy: that every voter deserves an equal voice in electing their government. Any attempt to silence the vote of even one American hurts all 300 million of us.

“Of course, none of this is new. Thankfully, neither is the fight to shape a more perfect union. For generations, communities have navigated attempts to silence their electoral power, and civil rights leaders have never stopped pushing our country closer to its ideals. As we approach the midterm elections, HRC is committed to mobilizing across the country, showing up for pro-equality candidates, and fighting for the kind of democracy we all deserve.”

"As Justice Elena Kagan wrote: “I dissent because the Court betrays its duty to faithfully implement the great statute Congress wrote. I dissent because the Court’s decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity.”

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people, with 3.6 million members and supporters.
