BAD AND WORSE: The Human Rights Campaign PAC Releases Campaign Opposing Luther Strange and Roy Moore

Birmingham, Ala. -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced a new campaign through its PAC to oppose the Senate candidacy of Roy Moore, the disgraced former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, and incumbent Senator Luther Strange. Both politicians are running in a special election for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Senator Luther Strange, who was appointed after Attorney General Jeff Sessions was selected to lead the Department of Justice. In this election, Alabama Republican primary voters have been given no viable choice when it comes to a politician who will treat all Alabamians with respect. For this reason, HRC feels it has no choice but to inform voters about the records of both candidates.

HRC PAC is launching ads opposing the candidacies of Moore and Strange alongside a direct mail campaign. HRC will be highly active -- using these tactics and others -- in opposing the two Alabamians’ candidacies, sending a clear message to anti-LGBTQ politicians: if you attack our community, we will fight back. When it comes to Republican candidates for U.S. Senate, Strange and Moore represent “bad” and “worse” for Alabama.

“In this Republican runoff in Alabama, Luther Strange is a bad choice for the U.S. Senate and Roy Moore is worse. Moore is fundamentally unfit for public office, which is why he was forcibly removed as Chief Justice – twice. Alabamians shouldn’t reward someone who was fired from his job with a better one,” said Eva Kendrick, HRC Alabama state director. “Neither candidate cares about the conservative principles they claim to cherish, such as small government, as both men fought relentlessly against marriage equality, using taxpayers’ money. Strange and Moore are wrong for Alabama.”

In 2016, HRC Alabama initiated the #NoMoore campaign to remove Moore from the Alabama Supreme Court for his blatant legal and ethical failings. Recently, he took his extremism one step further by saying that he and Vladimir Putin may be “more akin... than [he] knows,” specifically citing both of their views on LGBTQ rights. Luther Strange, for his part, was vocally in support of bans on same-sex marriage in Alabama, using taxpayers’ money to fund the fight against marriage equality as Alabama’s attorney general.

In 2014, HRC launched Project One America, an initiative geared towards advancing social, institutional and legal equality in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi. HRC Alabama continues to work to advance equality for LGBTQ Alabamians who have no statewide protections in housing, workplace, or public accommodations; or legal state recognition for their relationships and families. Through HRC Alabama, we are working toward a future of fairness every day -- changing hearts, minds and laws toward achieving full equality.
