Campaign seeks to ensure every vote counts on ballot measures in Ohio

COLUMBUS, OH — Today, the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of the No On Issue 1 campaign in Ohio. No On Issue 1 is a citizen-driven, grassroots, non-partisan coalition representing millions of Ohio voters that have come together to protect the sacred principle of one person one vote, and preserve majority rule in Ohio by voting No on Issue 1 on August 8th.

The vote on Issue 1 comes in advance of a November ballot initiative that would make abortion a legal right in Ohio. That ballot initiative, which HRC helped organize signature collection for, would face a 60% threshold if Issue 1 succeeds in August. If the No On Issue 1 campaign is successful, the ballot initiative threshold would remain at 50%. HRC’s support of No On Issue 1 is a continuation of our dedication to protecting democracy.

With its endorsement, HRC is dedicated to activating its grassroots army of supporters and volunteers in Ohio and mobilizing Equality Voters in opposition to Issue 1. Equality Voters — which surpass 2 million in Ohio and more than 62 million nationwide — are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans for whom LGBTQ+ equality is a top election issue, and who represented 39 percent of the 2022 electorate.

Voting no on Issue 1 means making sure Ohioans’ voices are heard and Ohioans’ votes are counted. If Issue 1 succeeds, it will be an immediate threat to LGBTQ+ rights, to abortion rights, and, more broadly, Ohioans’ rights to ensure that their values are reflected in how their state is governed. Our endorsement of the No On Issue 1 campaign will bring with it our full support to mobilize Equality Voters in Ohio to keep the power in the hands of Ohio’s people.”

HRC’s Commitment to Ohio

Equality Voters — including the more than 2 million in Ohio and the more than 62 million nationwide — are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.
