HRC Remembers SaVanna Wanzer, Powerful Advocate for Trans Community in DC

by Laurel Powell

Earlier today, SaVanna Wanzer - a long-time leader in DC's LGBTQ+ community and passionate advocate for the trans community and for people living with HIV - passed away. The Human Rights Campaign joins with all those who knew her in celebrating her life and remembering her impact.

SaVanna Wanzer was a DC legend. She advocated for many years for the trans community and for people living with HIV, and served with many organizations, including DC Black Pride, Capital Pride, and NMAC. I know she was proud to create 'May is: All About Trans,' which recognizes the accomplishments of trans and gender-expansive people. I can say firsthand that SaVanna will not just be missed for her work, but for her sisterly wisdom and her sense of humor. She was never too proud to share her journey, including her many years living a sober life, to inspire others. We will miss her. We are all better because we knew SaVanna. And now, she is among the ancestors.
