Mayor Nirenberg has stood up for the LGBTQ community and helped expand opportunity for every San Antonian.

Today, HRC congratulated Ron Nirenberg on his reelection as mayor of San Antonio, Texas.

“Congratulations to San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg on his reelection. The people of San Antonio made it clear they want a leader that embraces equality and empowers voices from every community,” said HRC Texas State Director Rebecca Marques. “Throughout his tenure as Mayor, Nirenberg has stood up for the LGBTQ community and helped expand opportunity for every San Antonian. We have been proud to work with Nirenberg since his first election in 2015 and look forward to another term of pro-equality leadership at San Antonio’s City Hall.”

This last week, HRC has made significant investments to help Nirenberg cross the finish line: knocking on hundreds of doors, contacting thousands of voters and recruiting dozens of volunteers.

First elected as Mayor in 2017 after two terms in the City Council, Ron Nirenberg has been a steadfast ally of the LGBTQ community, including his opposition to anti-LGBTQ legislation in the Texas state legislature this year. During his time on the City Council, Nirenberg played a key role in passing the city’s non-discrimination ordinance barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. As Mayor, Nirenberg created a “LGBTQ Advisory Commission” to help make the city government operate more inclusively. The Commission, which includes HRC San Antonio Steering Committee Chair Luka Rios, has since advised the Mayor on numerous pro-equality policy changes increasing the HRC Municipal Equality Index score to a perfect 100.
