#AM_Equality: Equality Act to be voted on in House today; new polls reveals more Americans identify as LGBTQ

EQUALITY ACT TO BE VOTED ON IN HOUSE TODAY: Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., said he was “excited” to see the likely passage of the bill in the House. “In many ways,” the coming vote showed how Congress was “catching up to the rest of the country” on LGBTQ rights, he said, citing shifts in public opinion in support of anti-discrimination legislation. The legislation was “long overdue.” More from USA Today.

NEW POLL REVEALS MORE AMERICANS IDENTIFY AS LGBTQ: According to a report by Gallup, almost 5.6% of Americans consider themselves to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. “This poll confirms what we have long known -- that the LGBTQ community is powerful and a growing force in the United States, and around the world,” said Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign President. “As a growing percentage of the population comes out as LGBTQ, it only amplifies the need for the Equality Act to be passed through Congress swiftly and with bipartisan support in order to secure consistent and explicit anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across all areas of life.” More from NBC News, CNN, and USA Today.
