Human Rights Campaign, Inc./Human Rights Campaign Foundation | As the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, the Human Rights Campaign is dedicated to ending discrimination, securing equal rights and protecting the health and safety of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout the world. With a 200-person national staff and more than 3 million members and supporters throughout the country, HRC lobbies the federal, state and municipal governments on LGBTQ+ legislative and regulatory matters, advocates before the courts as an amicus curiae, participates in judicial and executive branch nominations process, leads and/or actively works on national civil rights coalitions, educates the public, participates in elections and works at the grassroots level on civil rights and political matters of national, state and municipal importance. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation operates for charitable and educational purposes. HRCF conducts research, publishes and develops educational programs and distributes educational materials on issues and topics of concern to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as provides services and assistance to members of the LGBTQ+ community to enable them to take advantage of their rights under existing law and encourage economic and legal practices which do not discriminate against them.
HRC General Counsel’s Office | Comprised of five attorneys, HRC’s General Counsel provides comprehensive corporate legal service to HRC and the HRC Foundation and their Boards of Directors and Governors. The office provides legal counsel on a large variety of topics, including corporate governance, organization risk management, federal and state election law and lobbying disclosure requirements, legal and regulatory compliance, intellectual property protection, preparation of both simple and complex contracts, litigation management, drafting of policies and procedures and associated staff training, as well as other internal corporate matters. Fellows undertake projects involving sophisticated legal research and writing, analysis, drafting of contracts and policies and procedures, preparing minutes of corporate board meetings, and other tasks as needed.
Qualifications | Applicants should possess a strong academic record at an accredited American law school, excellent interpersonal, legal research and writing skills and an interest in in-house nonprofit lawyering. 1L, 2L, and 3L candidates are eligible. Competition for fellowship appointments is extremely competitive.

Time Commitment and Stipends | Fall and Spring Law Fellowships are full or part-time for up to 13 weeks. Summer Law Fellowships are available only as full-time positions for a 6 to 10-week period. Stipends are available for summer fellowship positions.
Fellowships may be done for course credit if your school permits. HRC will cooperate in a fellow's application for remuneration, including through public interest grants, and academic credit.
Application Deadlines | Application periods for the summer, fall and spring terms begin in January, May and August, respectively. Deadlines are rolling. Because HRC receives a significant number of applications, it is wise to apply as early as possible.
