WASHINGTON - Following is a statement from the Human Rights Campaign’s Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof upon news that Senator Mikulski would retire from the U.S. Senate after the completion of her current term. During her time in the U.S. Senate, Mikulski co-sponsored key pieces of LGBT legislation, including the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, ENDA, and a bill to repeal DOMA.
“Sen. Mikulski’s work has improved virtually every facet of life for LGBT Americans, whether it’s her work on Hate Crimes legislation, her work to repeal DOMA and fight for marriage equality, or her work on ENDA to help combat discrimination against LGBT Americans in the workplace. Between her attention to detail in committee and her willingness to push for major legislation, Sen. Mikulski has been a strong partner and advocate for LGBT equality. Given her strong record of leadership, we look forward to working with Sen. Mikulski in the next two years on issues like funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, but the LGBT community will miss working with her as chair and ranking member of appropriations as well as her role as Dean of the Senate Women when she eventually retires.”
Sen. Mikulski received a 100% rating on the HRC Scorecard for the 113th Congress. The scorecard rates members of Congress on their positions on LGBT-related legislation.
