Today, HRC announced that U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), one of the many pro-equality champions running for the White House in 2020, will speak at the 2019 HRC Los Angeles Dinner this Saturday, March 30, 2019. As previously announced, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) will also speak, six-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera with be honored with the HRC Ally for Equality Award, and Emmy Award-winning actor, producer and LGBTQ advocate Yeardley Smith will be honored with the HRC National Leadership Award. Celebrated artists Betty Who and Shea Diamond will both perform, as well as comedian Dana Goldberg.
“From fighting to defeat Proposition 8 in California, to fighting for the Equality Act in Washington, Senator Kamala Harris has spent her career in public life standing up and speaking out for the LGBTQ community,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “By working to achieve crucial non-discrimination protections for our community, Senator Harris is a key leader in our effort for full federal equality and we are honored to welcome her to one of our most important events of the year.”
A lifelong public safety and civil rights leader, Senator Harris was the first African-American and first woman to serve as Attorney General of California. She is also the second African-American woman in history to be elected to the United States Senate. Throughout her career as a prosecutor, Harris was a tireless advocate for voiceless and vulnerable Californians — including those in the LGBTQ community. Sen. Harris earned a perfect 100 percent on the HRC Congressional Scorecard for the 115th Congress. She joined with other pro-equality lawmakers this month to reintroduce the Equality Act in Congress. The measure has unprecedented support from nearly 70 percent of Americans, more than 280 members of Congress, more than 180 major businesses and more than 300 statewide and national organizations.
