HRC staff joined city leaders from across the Magnolia State to participate in the 2018 Mississippi Municipal League annual conference on the Mississippi gulf coast.  The event provided the opportunity to speak one-on-one with municipal officials about how to make their communities more welcoming and hospitable, especially to LGBTQ people.

“Everybody deserves to feel safe and welcomed in their community,” one alderman said as he committed to do more in his town to promote equality.  This was just one of many fruitful conversations enjoyed over the two-day event.

HRC’s Municipal Equality Index examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies and services are of the LGBTQ people who live and work there. Many of these policy changes included in the MEI can be made at minimal cost, but pay dividends in productivity and retention.

HRC Mississippi looks forward to working with the many leaders from around Mississippi whom we met in order to help their cities and towns lead the way in equality.
