TOMORROW -- Mike Pence and Scott Walker Campaign Against Equality in Hudson, WI

by Ianthe Metzger

MILWAUKEE -- Today, four days before the crucial midterm, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, responded to Vice President Mike Pence’s latest campaign stop in Wisconsin to stump for anti-LGBTQ Governor Scott Walker. Two extremists, Pence and Walker have long, deeply disturbing records of undermining equality for marginalized communities, including LGBTQ people.

“Mike Pence and Scott Walker have championed dangerous anti-LGBTQ policies that are not only wrong for Wisconsin, they are politically toxic in a state with more than half a million Equality Voters,” said HRC Wisconsin State Director. “From their support for a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people to their attempts to strip health care from hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites, they are hell bent on dragging Wisconsin backwards. The last thing voters want is four more years of Scott Walker as governor, putting his political ambitions above what’s best for Wisconsin. Over the next four days, HRC will continue to use every resource and tool available to make certain Equality Voters turn out to the polls on November 6 to elect Tony Evers as the Governor of our great state.”

Governor Scott Walker’s dangerous record includes supporting Wisconsin’s constitutional amendment banning marriage equality, vetoing a bill to provide domestic partner benefits to workers and attempting to kill a domestic partner registry. He supports banning qualified transgender people from serving in the military, saying he “wouldn’t change” the Trump-Pence administration’s unconstitutional policy. Walker also rejected Medicaid expansion under Obamacare and supported repeal of the entire law, which could strip health care from millions of Wisconsinites, including the 2.4 million Wisconsin residents with a pre-existing condition.

His opponent, HRC-endorsed Tony Evers, has a long career championing public education as a teacher, principal, district administrator and now state Superintendent. During his three terms as Superintendent. Evers has fought attempts to preempt local non-discrimination ordinances; supported legislation protecting LGBTQ youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy;” and supported expanding state non-discrimination law to include gender identity and expression.

HRC’s comprehensive “The Real Mike Pence” campaign includes a report, microsite and series of videos that shine a spotlight on Pence’s decades-long crusade against LGBTQ equality, and inside-the-White-House efforts leading the Trump-Pence administration’s attacks on LGBTQ people.

In Wisconsin, HRC has identified more than 560,000 million “Equality Voters” -- voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Wisconsin in the 2018 cycle, and has staff and resources on the ground in the state as part of the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
