Statement from Morgan Cox and Jodie Patterson, Human Rights Campaign and Foundation Board Chairs

by HRC Staff

We commend the courage of the many survivors of sexual harassment who have come forward, and give them our full support. The last few days have been difficult here at the Human Rights Campaign and Human Rights Campaign Foundation. President Alphonso David’s inclusion in the New York State Attorney General's report on the investigation of Governor Andrew Cuomo has raised questions about his actions from Human Rights Campaign and Human Rights Campaign Foundation employees, supporters, board members and partners. And we know this last week has been made all the more difficult because so many in the LGBTQ community are survivors of assault and harassment themselves.

The HRC and HRC Foundation Boards of Directors take your questions and concerns very seriously - we want them answered too. That is why, at the direction of the Boards, HRC and HRC Foundation Boards of Directors has retained an experienced outside law firm (Sidley Austin LLP) to conduct an internal investigation. This investigation - which will take no longer than 30 days, will include consideration of whether Alphonso David's actions aligned with HRC's mission and values, as well as with professional and ethics standards. Alphonso David will be fully cooperating and has welcomed the investigation.

One thing we want to make clear, this investigation will in no way hinder the organizations' continued pursuit of the critical work necessary to bring equity and liberation to the LGBTQ+ Community. That important work continues.
