Pro-Equality Candidate Wins State Legislative Race in Texas

by HRC Staff

WASHINGTON - Voters in Texas House District 97 elected Dan Barrett in a run-off election yesterday to replace a retiring State Representative. Barrett reportedly received just over 52% of the vote. House District 97 covers a portion of Fort Worth.

"The Human Rights Campaign congratulates Dan Barrett. This is a great victory for Texas, and also a victory for equality" said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "HRC also congratulates Joel Burns, who was elected to the Fort Worth City Council."

HRC worked to mobilize members in District 97 to vote for Barrett and urged members outside the district to volunteer.

Burns, who was endorsed by The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, will be the first openly gay elected official in Tarrant County, Texas.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
