Non-partisan Siena Poll Puts Support for Equal Marriage at 58%, Opposition at 36% - Both Records in NY State

WASHINGTON - A new poll released today shows public opinion continues to trend toward marriage equality in New York State with a record high of 58 percent support and a record low of 36 percent opposition. The study comes from the non-partisan Siena Research Institute.

"The more New Yorkers learn about marriage equality, the more they support this basic issue of fairness," said Brian Ellner, the Human Rights Campaign's Senior Strategist for the Campaign for New York Marriage. "We will continue our campaign to educate across the state so that everyone has the right to make a commitment and build a family with the person they love."

The previous Siena Research Institute Poll of January 2011 found 57 percent of New Yorkers support marriage for same-sex couples with 38 percent opposed.

"Momentum is clearly on our side with popular support and a Governor committed to this issue," said Ellner. "It's time for leaders in Albany to take up this critical issue and respect the loving and committed relationships of same-sex couples in our state."

HRC's Campaign for New York Marriage includes more than a dozen field organizers across the state, amplifying the grassroots voices of New Yorkers for Marriage Equality. The campaign also has garnered media attention through video testimonials from high-profile New Yorkers who support the right of same-sex couples to marry. To date, HRC has released videos from Bill Bratton and Rikki Klieman, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, former mayors Dinkins and Koch, Russell Simmons, Mark and Sunrise Ruffalo, John Slattery, Joan Rivers, Barbara Bush, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Fran Drescher, Moby, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Julianne Moore and Kenneth Cole - with more to follow in the coming weeks and months.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
