New Mexico State Legislature to Consider Historic Domestic Partnership Bill

by Admin

In the upcoming 2008 state legislative session New Mexico lawmakers will consider a broad Domestic Partnership Bill. If this legislation passes it will place New Mexico among a small handful of states that offer some form of recognition for same-sex couples. Last year, in the 2007 session, the bill passed the State House, had the support of the Governor and his Administration, and then died by just one vote in the State Senate. This year pro-equality forces are mobilized and the momentum is on our side to pass this monumental bill!

How YOU can get involved:

HRC regional field organizer Terry McGuire will be working on the campaign in the state through the end of the session on February 14th. To find out how you can help, contact him at terry.mcguire@hrc.org

1. Attend a House Action Party! Join New Mexicans across the state in attending a party in the name of fairness and equality. Dates are January 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th. Email for locations and times.

2. Attend State Capitol Lobby Day in Santa Fe! On February 4th people from every corner of the state will descend on the Capitol to speak to their legislators and make their voices heard. Email for details.

3. Work the polls during the Presidential Caucus! On February 5th New Mexico Democrats will go to the polls along with voters in 20 other states to pick their presidential candidate. We'll be outside the polls urging participants to support fairness and the Domestic Partnership Act. Contact Terry for more information.
