WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization joins LGBTQ+ people across the country in celebrating Pride Month. Despite the continued attacks on LGBTQ+ people’s lives and dignity, HRC enters this year’s Pride in a place of defiance and strength–announcing that it has grown to a record 4 million members and supporters, spanning every state in the union and every congressional district. Together in less than two years, we have amassed over 1.2 million actions aimed largely at this administration and Congress in support of LGBTQ+ equality, including letters to their elected officials, public comments on federal regulations and calls into Hill offices–all since Trump’s second term began.
Pride is a protest and it’s our power. And as we get ready to mark America’s 250th birthday, we’re stronger than ever before: HRC now stands at a record-high four million members and supporters. LGBTQ+ people have always been a part of this country’s history, and we are undeniably a part of its future. Our belief in a nation where everyone can live as their true selves, without exception, has always pushed this country toward becoming a better home for all. That’s why even with all the attacks coming our way, Pride celebrations across the country will show that our joy can’t be stolen and our strength can’t be diminished. One day soon, we will know more joy than grief. Our children will feel just as safe surrounded by the American flag as they do when surrounded by Pride flags. We’re reclaiming this country and its freedoms as our own, and we’re going to keep that momentum going to elect pro-equality leaders up and down and across the ballot this November. Let’s get free.
June 1st also marks HRC’s 6th annual Membership Appreciation Day, launching Pride season with a weekend of gratitude. HRC will participate in more than 150 pride events across the country this year, in addition to honoring the 10th anniversary of the Pulse shooting in Orlando, Florida.
