WASHINGTON - Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, issued the following statement today regarding an Indiana House committee voting five to five to kill a state constitutional amendment bill banning same-sex marriage. This vote by the Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee effectively kills the bill for the Indiana General Assembly session that ends April 11.
Said Solmonese:
"Today we applaud each Indiana legislator who bravely took a stand against excluding certain families from their rights and who refused to write discrimination into their state's constitution. We commend Indiana Equality, Indiana Stonewall Democrats, PFLAG and our members and supporters for working to kill this harmful amendment. We also thank our corporate allies for their support and leadership in ensuring that their employees are treated equally and fairly in Indiana."
The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
