Human Rights Campaign PAC Endorses Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper for U.S. Senate

RALEIGH, NC — Today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper for U.S. Senate.

A victory by Cooper in November is essential to securing a pro-equality majority in Congress to combat the authoritarian, discriminatory policies of the Trump administration.

“North Carolinians deserve a fighter who leaves no one behind. That fighter is Roy Cooper,” said Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson. “He is ready to serve North Carolina, including the 748,000 LGBTQ+ North Carolinians, at a crossroads in history, bringing his experience to a U.S. Senate that desperately needs more pro-equality voices. The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse his candidacy and to work to help him get elected this November.”

Cooper was governor for two terms, from 2017-25, and before that he served in the state Legislature and then four terms as North Carolina Attorney General. During his time as governor, he successfully presided over an expansion of Medicaid in the state, dramatically bringing down health insurance costs for residents. 

“I’m running to make stuff cost less for all North Carolina families,” said Roy Cooper. “I believe that when we all work together, we can build a state and nation that works for everyone.” 

An Opponent with a Dire Anti-Equality Record

Michael Whatley, President Trump’s minion and hand-picked candidate for this race, would bring an appalling anti-equality, MAGA track record to Congress. As chairman of the Republican National Committee, Whatley has pushed to ban abortion, and under his leadership, the RNC endorsed the discredited theory that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. 

HRC’s Commitment to North Carolina

Equality Voters — including the nearly 3 million in North Carolina — are a powerful and diverse voting bloc united by support for LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, and they recognize and trust the HRC brand. Also, new research from HRC Foundation finds that 10.5 percent of the NC population identifies as LGBTQ+. HRC PAC has made significant investments in North Carolina over the years, working to elect pro-equality champions up and down the ballot. Today, HRC PAC continues to build on this legacy by mobilizing Equality Voters and supporting leaders, like Roy Cooper, who are committed to ensuring every North Carolinian can live free from discrimination and with full dignity under the law.
