by Alana Caesar

LONG ISLAND, NY — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) PAC, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of former Democratic representative Tom Suozzi (NY-3) to the House of Representatives to reclaim his previously held seat and reestablish a Democratic stronghold in Long Island and Queens. With this endorsement, HRC will focus on activating 28,000 local volunteers and turning out the district’s over 217,000 Equality Voters.

“This special election is a moment we can’t let pass us by. Tom Suozzi is an experienced leader with a proven record of successfully serving the people of Long Island and Queens. Constituents in New York’s 3rd Congressional District are tired of the circus that George Santos brought to Congress and are ready for serious leadership focused on solving pressing problems. The Human Rights Campaign stands with them and is ready to mobilize Equality Voters to the polls.”

Kelley Robinson, Human Rights Campaign President

“I am grateful for the support and endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign. This will be a tough race, and the support of HRC, which has been dedicated to anti-discrimination research, advocacy, and education for more than 40 years, means a great deal to me.”

Tom Suozzi, Former Representative, NY-3 Candidate

Suozzi represented the congressional district for three terms from 2016 to 2022 and defeated then-Republican nominee George Santos by more than 12 points in the 2020 general election. During his tenure in the US House of Representatives, he consistently scored 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard, signifying that he supported key legislation that HRC sees as essential to promoting equality.. He also served as the mayor of Glen Cove from 1994 to 2001 and as Nassau County’s elected executive from 2002 to 2009.

HRC’s Commitment to New York

Equality Voters, including the over 217,000 in NY-3, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate; they recognize and trust the HRC brand and are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties. HRC will work to mobilize and energize Equality Voters in NY-3 to propel Tom Suozzi to victory in 2024.
