Human Rights Campaign Endorses State Rep. Julie Johnson for U.S. Congress in Texas’ 32nd Congressional District

by HRC Staff

DALLAS, TX — Today, the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of Texas State Rep. Julie Johnson for U.S. Congress, to represent Texas’ 32nd congressional district. Rep. Johnson was first elected in 2018 and was the first legislator in Texas history to serve while married to a spouse of the same gender. Her leadership in Texas has been a game-changer — she has been instrumental in defeating anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and improving bills that would’ve had broad, discriminatory impact on millions of Texans. She is also a member of the Texas State House’s first-ever LGBTQ Caucus.

With its endorsement, HRC is dedicated to activating its grassroots army of supporters and volunteers in Texas and mobilizing Equality Voters in support of Johnson’s candidacy. Equality Voters — which surpass 2 million in Texas and more than 62 million nationwide — are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans for whom LGBTQ+ equality is a top election issue, and who represented 39 percent of the 2022 electorate. HRC has consistently endorsed Johnson since she launched her first campaign for Texas House in 2017, and has deployed on-the-ground staff across the Lone Star, supporting Johnson and other champions for equality.

Rep. Julie Johnson’s work in the Texas State Legislature is proof positive that she is a steadfast and dedicated fighter for civil rights and championing protections for the most marginalized and disenfranchised among us. Raised by public school teachers, Julie understands the challenges facing our schools — and what must be done to protect our kids and provide them with an education that will set them up for success. As a lawyer, Julie has a keen understanding of how the system works, and how to use it to make a real difference. And as a legislator, Julie has gone toe to toe with those in power, defeating a slew of discriminatory bills and also unseating the state representative who wrote the anti-LGBTQ bathroom bill in Texas. When elected, Julie will bring an important and fresh perspective to Congress, drawing from a lifetime of experience and serving as a champion for equality. We’re proud to endorse her yet again as she seeks to make history in 2024.”

Kelley Robinson, Human Rights Campaign President

As a proud gay Texan and a devoted advocate for equality, receiving the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign is a deeply meaningful moment for me. This organization has been at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in our great state, and I am honored to have served and been involved with them for decades. HRC members from across the state blockwalked every one of my winning campaigns for state house and I'm proud to continue the march towards justice with them at my side. Together, we will work towards a more inclusive Texas for all its residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

Julie Johnson, Texas State Representative

Rep. Julie Johnson continues to demonstrate exemplary leadership as a community leader throughout her time serving in the Texas State Legislature. Julie fights for her constituents, on a wide range of issues that matter to Texans from healthcare to LGBTQ+ rights. Inspiringly, Rep. Johnson will represent Texas as its first openly-LGBTQ+ member of Congress – Julie would also expand on the 118th Congress’ historic representation for the LGBTQ+ community. We are ready to do everything we can to support her campaign.”

Melodía Gutiérrez, Human Rights Campaign Texas State Director

HRC’s Commitment to Texas

Equality Voters — including the more than 2 million in Texas and the more than 62 million nationwide — are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ+ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
