Human Rights Campaign Endorses Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber

by Ianthe Metzger

WASHINGTON - Today the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber for reelection based on his strong record of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

Governor Kitzhaber has a long and impressive history of voting for non-discrimination measures, expanding access to health care, and supporting marriage equality for same-sex couples.

“The Human Rights Campaign only endorses candidates who share our core values of equality and respect for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Oregonians are fortunate to have a governor who shares these values and has worked every day to continue the state’s leadership on issues of equality,” said HRC’s National Field Director Marty Rouse.

Kitzhaber’s Republican opponent Dennis Richardson has described people’s sexual orientation as “behavior-based,” a choice not unlike smoking and drinking. He also personally intervened in a Multnomah County court case to block LGBT couples from having their marriages recognized.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.
