Human Rights Campaign Endorses New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for Reelection

by HRC Staff

SANTA FE — Today the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for reelection. HRC PAC is committed to engaging our volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize the more than 450,000 Equality Voters in New Mexico in support of Governor Lujan Grisham and other pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.

Human Rights Campaign Senior Vice President, Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof released the following statement:

“While extremist politicians across the country attempt to roll back critical protections for LGBTQ+ Americans, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has proven to be a pro-equality champion for all New Mexicans. During her time in Congress, Lujan Grisham was a steadfast advocate for pro-equality policies, earning her a 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard in each of her three terms. She has carried that same commitment to Santa Fe where she has advocated for full legal and lived equality for all New Mexicans. Under her leadership as governor, New Mexico became the first state in the country to collect LGBTQ+ data across all state agencies – ensuring that all LGBTQ+ New Mexicans have access to critical government services and programs. The Human Rights Campaign is proud to support her bid for reelection.”

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement:

“New Mexico celebrates our history as a state of many identities and cultures. As governor, I am proud to fight for the basic human rights of every New Mexican, especially our LGBTQ+ community. My administration championed the New Mexico Civil Rights Act, as well as the Safe Schools for All Students Act, both of which enshrine protections for LGBTQ+ New Mexicans. I will continue to stand up for civil rights and a diverse economy that is open for all, and I will stand against any discriminatory social agendas that would undermine our progress. I am honored to be endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign, and I am proud to fight for the rights of every New Mexican.”

HRC’s Commitment to New Mexico

Equality Voters, including the more than 450,000 in New Mexico, are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

Across the country, HRC PAC works every day to elect pro-equality leaders who support policies that will support the rights and lives of LGBTQ+ people. During the 2020 election cycle, HRC staff on the ground recruited 5,800 individual volunteers nationwide who completed 28,500 hours of voter contact in more than 2,650 volunteer events. HRC engaged in robust digital and online GOTV efforts, including sending over 2.7 million person-to-person text messages, a massive increase from 2018 when approximately 500,000 texts were sent. HRC sent over 2.5 million mail pieces, had over 930,000 phone conversations with voters, and engaged more than 200,000 voters through HRC’s voter dashboard at hrc.org/vote.
