Human Rights Campaign Endorses Lorie Burch for U.S. Congress

WASHINGTON — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Lorie Burch (D) in her bid to represent the people of Texas’ 3rd Congressional District. Burch is running against anti-LGBTQ Texas State Senator Van Taylor (R) to replace outgoing U.S. Representative Sam Johnson.

“Lorie Burch is the clear choice for fair-minded voters of Texas’ 3rd Congressional District,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. “From Plano to McKinney to Blue Ridge, Texas’ hard-working families deserve a representative in Congress who will stand up for fairness and equality, reject the toxic and divisive politics of discrimination, and find common-sense solutions to the challenges they face. HRC is proud to endorse Lorie Burch for Congress.”

"Thank you to the Human Rights Campaign for this endorsement,” said Lorie Burch. “I have been a part of the HRC family for many years. From my time as a McCleary Law Fellow in Washington, DC to serving as the Co-chair of the DFW HRC Steering Committee to being a candidate for United States Congress — HRC has been part of my leadership and advocacy journey. I am honored to continue to work together for equal dignity, equal justice, and equal opportunity for all people.”

Lorie is an attorney, businesswoman, mother, and passionate advocate for LGBTQ equality. An out and proud member of the LGBTQ community, Lorie lives with her wife and two daughters in Plano, Texas. A longtime member of HRC, she has also served as the former chair of the HRC Federal Club and former co-chair of the HRC Dallas-Fort Worth Steering Committee.

While Lorie believes strongly in equality and treating every individual with dignity and respect, her opponent in the race, Van Taylor, was designated by Equality Texas as one of the “Top 5 Worst Texas Senators on LGBT Issues.”

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
