Nelson Would Be First Openly LGBTQ+ Legislator in Mississippi History

Jackson, MS — Today, the Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of Fabian Nelson for the Mississippi House of Representatives, District 66.

HRC PAC is committed to engaging its volunteers, members and supporters to mobilize Equality Voters in Mississippi in support of pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot. According to PRRI, more than 66% of Mississippians support LGBT non-discrimination protections.

Human Rights Campaign Mississippi State Director Rob Hill released the following statement:

“The Human Rights Campaign is proud to endorse Fabian Nelson for the Mississippi House of Representatives, District 66. If elected into office, Nelson would become the first openly LGBTQ+ legislator in Mississippi state history, making him a powerful voice for historically underrepresented communities. He has a strong record of advocacy, and we’re confident that he would fight for legislation that works for all of his constituents, including Black Mississippians and LGBTQ+ Mississippians.”

A small business owner and local advocate, Fabian Nelson will be the first openly LGBTQ+ legislator in Mississippi history if elected this November. Nelson served on HRC’s Jackson, Mississippi Steering Committee, and was an advocate in opposing scores of anti-equality bills that the state legislature considered this past year. Nelson is also pro-choice, and is an advocate for affordable housing and healthcare access.

HRC’s Commitment to Mississippi

Equality Voters — including the more than 62 million nationwide — are a voting bloc of demographically and geographically diverse Americans who are united by the advancement of LGBTQ+ equality. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate, they recognize and trust the HRC brand, and they are more likely to identify with issue-specific organizations than candidates or political parties.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ+ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
