Human Rights Campaign Endorses Dr. Tyler Titus For County Executive

by Wyatt Ronan

The Human Rights Campaign PAC (HRC PAC) announced its endorsement of Dr. Tyler Titus for Erie County Executive. Dr. Titus would become the first transgender county executive ever elected in the United States, marking the highest executive office any transgender person in the United States has ever held.

Dr. Tyler Titus has a long record of LGBTQ+ advocacy and work in Erie County and across Pennsylvania, including their role on the Greater Erie Alliance for Equality (GEAE) Advisory Council, their work on LGBTQ+ suicide prevention, and their current role as Vice-Chair of Pennsylvania’s Commission of LGBTQ+ Affairs.

“Dr. Tyler Titus has worked tirelessly on behalf of students, teachers, and families in Erie County and across Pennsylvania.” said Human Rights Campaign Pennsylvania State Director Ryan Matthews. “Their election and service as the Erie County Executive would make the county a safer and more equitable place for all people to live. Erie County deserves the committed and hardworking leadership Dr. Titus would bring to county government on their behalf, which is why the Human Rights Campaign is so proud to endorse their campaign.”

“The Human Rights Campaign has been on the frontlines of the fight for LGBTQ+ equality for over 40 years,” said Dr. Tyler Titus, Democratic nominee for Erie County Executive. “They have helped countless candidates achieve success in legislative offices and, with this endorsement, recognize the critical next step of electing queer and trans executives. This campaign is for every child who has been told they don't belong—that they don't deserve a seat at the table. This campaign—and my partnership with HRC—will show them that they deserve to sit at the head."

HRC has identified more than 2.9 million Pennsylvanians as “Equality Voters” -- voters who support LGBTQ+-inclusive policies. HRC prioritized investments and organizing in Pennsylvania in the 2020 cycle, with 14 staff working day and night to elect pro-equality candidates up and down the ticket and turn out voters in order to protect and advance the rights of more than 416,000 LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians. HRC retained staff in the commonwealth after the 2020 election to mobilize pro-equality Pennsylvanians in 2021, 2022, and beyond.

Dr. Tyler Titus (they/them) is a mental health professional, small business owner, and the president of the Erie School Board. In May, Dr. Titus defied local expectations with an impressive victory in a 4-way primary, bringing them one step closer to becoming the first transgender county executive in United States history. Dr. Titus is already the first trans person elected in Pennsylvania and one of just 9 non-binary elected officials in the nation. If Dr. Titus wins on November 2, 2021, they would bring 15 years of experience at the Erie County Office of Children and Youth and as a therapist for youth in the foster system to the office of Erie County Executive.
