Human Rights Campaign Endorses Aftab Pureval for Congress

Columbus, OH -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced its endorsement of Aftab Pureval for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Ohio’s first Congressional District.

“The clear choice come November, Aftab Pureval is a tenacious fighter who will be a champion for Ohio’s working families,” said HRC Ohio State Manager Shawn Copeland.“We proudly endorse his candidacy to represent Ohio’s first Congressional District, and look forward to working with another pro-equality voice in the United States Congress.”

“I'm honored to receive the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign,” said Aftab Pureval. “In Congress, I will stand up for the LGBT community and stand against all forms of discrimination.  HRC is committed to fairness and equality for all people, and I look forward to working together with HRC to advance those goals.”

A former federal prosecutor and current Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, Pureval has fought for the equal rights of every American. He is a strong champion for the LGBTQ community who supports marriage equality and the Equality Act, landmark federal legislation that would provide the same basic nondiscrimination protections to LGBTQ people as other protected groups under federal law. Pureval is facing incumbent Rep. Steve Chabot (R). During his two decades in Washington, Chabot has consistently received a zero on HRC’s congressional scorecard which measures members’ of Congress support for LGBTQ equality.

In Ohio, HRC has identified more than 1,550,000 “Equality Voters” -- voters who support LGBTQ-inclusive policies including marriage equality, equitable family law, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. HRC has prioritized investments and organizing in Ohio in the 2018 cycle, and has already put staff and resources on the ground in the state. Last year, HRC announced a coast-to-coast campaign called HRC Rising, which represents the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history.

The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
