'Five senators took a principled stand and should be applauded for their leadership,' said HRC President Joe Solmonese.

WASHINGTON - Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese released the following statement today after Judge John G. Roberts' nomination was voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee:

"Five senators took a principled stand and should be applauded for their leadership. Senators Biden, Durbin, Feinstein, Kennedy and Schumer, who voted against the nomination, have sent a message that only justices who demonstrate their commitment to protect the rights and liberties of all Americans are fit to serve on the nation's highest court. As the full Senate considers the nomination, we urge senators to carefully evaluate the consequences of Judge Roberts' troubling record and his lifetime appointment to the bench as chief justice."

The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and trnsgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
