HRC Endorses Kyrsten Sinema for U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization announced its endorsement of Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-9) for U.S. Senate.

“Kyrsten Sinema is a fighter and a trailblazer who has spent her career advancing the rights of the LGBTQ community,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “As a highly effective legislator, Kyrsten has proven herself to be a relentless champion for equality. We are proud to endorse her candidacy for the U.S. Senate.”

“I am honored to earn the support of the Human Rights Campaign,“ said Sinema. “HRC has worked tirelessly to ensure all Arizona families can love and take care of each other. We won’t stop fighting until every Arizonan has his or her shot at the American dream.”

First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, Kyrsten Sinema is the first openly bisexual member of the House. She has been a staunch advocate for the LGBTQ community, serving as a co-chair of the chamber’s Equality Caucus, earning a perfect 100 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecards each Congress since she was elected, and cosponsoring the Equality Act. During her time in Congress, Sinema has worked fiercely to ensure every Arizonian and American has a shot at the American Dream.

HRC recently announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The expansion is the biggest strategic investment in the organization’s 37-year history and will include significant investments in Arizona. HRC has identified more than 675,000 Arizonans as likely Equality Voters, meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including same-sex marriage, adoption by LGBTQ people, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Human Rights Campaign is America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
