WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, today congratulated Vermont’s Governor Peter Shumlin on his re-election. Because of a requirement in the state’s constitution, very tight election results in November required the legislature to vote to determine the race’s victor. Governor Shumlin won the legislature’s vote by 110 to 69. Marty Rouse, HRC’s National Field Director, issued the following statement:
“Governor Shumlin has been a tremendous advocate for fairness and equality in Vermont, and we are thrilled he will be able to continue that leadership. We congratulate him on his victory and look forward to continuing to work with him and the legislature on issues of importance to equality and LGBT Vermonters.”
The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. HRC envisions a world where LGBT people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.
