HRC and SHOWTIME Team Up to Host Screenings of 'The L Word'&reg Entering its Second Season on SHOWTI

WASHINGTON - As part of a national outreach effort to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, the Human Rights Campaign and SHOWTIME are teaming up to hold 33 major screening events nationwide for the second season premiere of the hit SHOWTIME series &quotThe L Word&quot&reg returning on the network on Feb. 20 at 10 p.m. (EST/PST). &quotThe L Word&quot is about a group of lesbian women in Los Angeles, their lives, careers and relationships. HRC and SHOWTIME are also partnering with HRC members on more than 300 expected &quotThe L Word&quot house parties.

&quotWe set out to bridge gaps by inviting the audience into our world of difference, knowing that they'll soon forget our otherness, as they recognize how much of the big emotional journey we share in common,&quot said show's creator/executive producer, Ilene Chaiken.

Free screening events produced by HRC and SHOWTIME will be held Feb. 20, the night of the season premiere, in more than 30 cities. The list includes: Atlanta Boston Chicago Cleveland (also produced by Adelphia) Columbus, Ohio (also produced by Time Warner Cable) Dallas (two venues) Denver Detroit Houston (two venues, produced by Time Warner Cable) Indianapolis Kansas City, Mo. Long Island, N.Y. Los Angeles - to be emceed by comedian Susan Westenhoeffer Miami Nashville, Tenn. New Hope, Penn. New Orleans New York City Orlando, Fla. Orange County, Calif. Charlotte, N.C. Philadelphia Phoenix Provincetown, R.I. Raleigh, N.C. Salt Lake City San Antonio San Francisco Seattle St. Louis Twin Cities, Minn. and Washington, D.C. Screenings produced by HRC, SHOWTIME and Comcast will also be held in Atlanta on Feb. 15 and Boston on Feb. 19.

HRC and members across the country are also working together to host house parties to watch the series premiere (Feb. 20, at 10 p.m. EST/PST). At press time, more than 300 people have committed to hosting a party, and the number is rapidly rising.

This is the second season of collaboration between HRC and SHOWTIME. Last year, 24 events were held with an attendance of more than 8,500. To accommodate overflow crowds, many cities, including Chicago and Atlanta, added a second screening last year. There is massive interest in premiere events this year, with a 33 percent increase over last year.
