HRC Celebrates Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month

by HRC staff

The Human Rights Campaign celebrates and honors Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month this year by elevating the voices of those who live at the intersection of LGBTQ+ and AANHPI identities. We aim to spotlight the joy, power and resilience of the AANHPI community through a queer lens. We hope our campaign throughout the month of May will offer a platform for LGBTQ+ AANHPI people at a time when both the LGBTQ+ community and AANHPI communities are experiencing unprecedented levels of hate-filled harassment and violence as well as legislative attacks.

Our AANHPI Heritage Month celebration centers our spoken word video series in partnership with Asian American Writers’ Workshop and Youth Speaks. These videos, featuring three young LGBTQ+ AANHPI spoken word artists, bring visibility to the legacy of issues impacting people who live at the intersections of LGBTQ+ and AANHPI identities.

We’re also elevating content which spotlight our work with queer AANHPI communities and people.

We hope our observance of AANHPI Heritage Month helps LGBTQ+ Asian-American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders celebrate your heritage, culture and traditions in a way that honors your queer identities as well.

Happy AANHPI Heritage Month!

To help us celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month, we’ve partnered with Lehuauakea (they/them), an interdisciplinary artist who identifies as māhū mixed-Native Hawaiian. Their artistic exploration of culture and cultural folklore and their undeniable and intricate ties to native lands and intersectional identities provide our observance of AANHPI Heritage Month an honest and intentional way of elevating AANHPI communities and community members.

For AANHPI, Lehuauakea has generously provided HRC with unique and one-of-a-kind art pieces intended to bring the joy and beauty of AANHPI culture to our celebration.
